4 alums garner NCAA awards

In one of the most diverse crops of weekly NCAA awards winners from the BCHL ranks yet, four league alums took home recognition this week across three different NCAA conferences.

Another unique point this week is three of the four BCHL grads are goalies.

Quinnipiac netminder and Vernon Vipers alum Andrew Shortridge took the ECAC Hockey goalie of the week award after posting back-to-back shutouts for the Bobcats against Brown and Yale. The native of Anchorage, Alaska made 52 saves in the process and evened his record for the season at 4-4-1. (CLICK HERE to read the full ECAC Hockey release)

In the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC), Powell River Kings grad Jeff Smith of St. Cloud State University as also named goalie of the week. The Maple Ridge, B.C. product posted a pair of wins over Colorado College, allowing just two goals while making 43 saves. (CLICK HERE to read the full NCHC release)

Also taking an ECAC Hockey nod was this week’s only skater to be recognized, Nanaimo Clippers alum Sheldon Rempal of Clarkson University. The native of Calgary had three goals and a helper as the Golden Knights earned wins over Colgate and Cornell. Rempal had the game-winner on the power play in the victory over Colgate.

The third BCHL graduate goaltender to be honoured this week is Olivier Mantha, a Penticton Vees product now a senior at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. The La Tuque, Que. native was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) goalie of the week. He recorded neither a win nor a loss as the Seawolves tied Michgan Tech both nights. Mantha made 73 saves on 77 shots to help UAA earn a pair of points. (CLICK HERE to read the full WCHA release)
