Ambrosio off to Lake Superior State

Lake Superior State’s men’s hockey team needed a centre and decided they couldn’t wait for next season to get one.

The Lakers committed to Coquitlam Express captain Alex Ambrosio over the holiday break and the Burnaby, B.C. native is already on campus preparing for his first NCAA game.

Ambrosio was leading the Express with 16 assists this season and was second on the team with 25 points. He accumulated 30 goals and 42 assists in 134 career BCHL games.

At Lake Superior State, Ambrosio joins a Lakers program that competes in the NCAA’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) along with Bemidji State, Alaska, Alabama-Huntsville, Alaska-Anchorage, Bowling Green, Northern Michigan, Michigan Tech, Ferris State and Minnesota State.

The Lakers have been a strong recruiting presence in the BCHL in the last few season. Coach Damon Whitten has BCHL alums Ryan Renz, Aidan Wright, Bryan Basilico, Kyle Chatham, Gage Torrel, Brayden Gelsinger, Jake Hand, Tyler Anderson and Diego Cuglietta on the roster.

While it is not common for a player to join an NCAA program from Junior hockey in midseason, a recent similar situation was that of Christian Cakebread who joined Niagara University from the Vernon Vipers last season.

Lake Superior State’s campus is located in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. and the team won NCAA national titles in 1988, 1992 and 1994. Prominent alumni of the program include Doug Weight, Jim Dowd and Brian Rolston.
