Around the BCHL – Saturday, Feb. 18

Chase Stevenson’s second goal of the night came as the OT winner for the West Kelowna Warriors in a 3-2 home triumph over the Victoria Grizzlies.

The good news for the Grizz is the single point earned gives them first place in the Island Division.

All the scoring in regulation came in the first period with Stevenson and Jon Russell putting the Warriors ahead by two but Cole Pickup and Lucas Clark replied for Victoria before the first intermission. That was it until Stevenson got his second at 4:05 of overtime. Gabriel Morency made 40 saves for the win while Tony Rehm stopped 29 for Victoria.

Chase Bell’s goal as part of a three-goal second period for the Merritt Centennials lifted them to a 4-2 home win over the Trail Smoke Eaters. Justen James had the visitors in front 1-0 after one but the Cents rallied with tallies by Nick Fidanza, Cade Gleekel and Bell to take the lead to the third. In the final frame, Brett Jewell put the game away with a late empty-netter. Carter Cochrane scored with 10 seconds left for the final Trail goal. Colten Lancaster made 38 saves for the win while Zach Dyment stopped 37 for Trail.

Riley Brandt scored twice in the first period to give the Vernon Vipers all they’d need on the way to a 4-1 home win over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. Luke Gingras scored with one second left in the first to make it 3-0 going to the second. Alex MacDonald got the lone ‘Dogs goal in the second and in the third, Connor Clouston added the final Vipers goal. Darion Hanson made 35 saves for the win.

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks got a shorthanded goal from Connor Sundquist followed less than a minute later by an even-strength tally from Nathan Iannone that stood as the winner in a 5-1 road win over the Penticton Vees. Austin Chorney made it 3-0 ‘Backs before Turner Ripplinger got the lone Vees goal. Jared Turcotte and Ryan Hogg tallies late in the third to round out the scoring. Trevin Kozlowski made 35 saves for the win and 1st Star.

Carter Turnbull’s goal early in the third wound up as the winner for the Powell River Kings in a 4-1 home win over the Nanaimo Clippers. After a scoreless first, Ben Berard got the Kings on the board on the power play in the second. Turnbull’s decisive tally came at 1:24 of the third and Matthew Cairns supplied insurance before Josh Blanchard got the Clippers lone marker. Curtis McCarrick added the final Powell River goal; Mitch Adamyk made 30 saves for the win.

Charlie Combs scored twice, giving him 49 goals on the season, to help the Wenatchee Wild to a 6-1 home win over the Langley Rivermen. Zac Masson opened the scoring for the visitors in the first but it would be the only puck to beat Anthony Yamnitsky on the night. Dakota Raabe made it 1-1 heading to the first intermission and in the second, Brian Williams scored 25 seconds in followed by Combs’ pair. Chris Jones and Troy Conzo rounded out the scoring in the third.

The Chilliwack Chiefs allowed the first two goals of the game but stormed back with a five-goal second period on the way to a 7-2 home win over the Surrey Eagles. Landon Fuller and Cory Babichuk had the visitors ahead 2-0 early but Aaron O’Neill got one back in the first for Chilliwack and the second was all Chiefs with Tommy Lee, Kohen Olischefski, Will Calverley, Colin Bernard and Jordan Kawaguchi all tallying. Connor McCarthy added the final Chiefs tally in the third.
