BCHL playoff recap – Monday, March 5

Braedon Fleming stopped 26 of 27 shots and Brendan Budy scored a late go-ahead goal as the Langley Rivermen beat the Surrey Eagles 2-1 to get their first win of the series.

Langley’s Eric Butte opened the scoring less than five minutes into the first period with his first of the playoffs to give the Rivermen a 1-0 lead after one. Aaron White tied the game for Surrey 1:05 into the second frame and the score stayed that way until Budy put Langley up for good with less than two minutes to go in the third period. Eagles goaltender Mario Cavaliere made 34 saves on 36 shots in the loss.

With the win, the Rivermen have climbed back into the series and now trail the Eagles 2-1. Game four goes tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Surrey.

Patrick Cozzi scored midway through the first overtime period to give the Prince George Spruce Kings a 2-1 win as well as a 2-1 series lead over the Chilliwack Chiefs. Will Calverley scored his second of the playoffs for Chilliwack in the second period, but Chays Ruddy answered back to tie the game 11 minutes later to force overtime. Prince George goalie Evan DeBrouwer stopped 32 of 33 shots to get the win and was named first star for the second game in a row.

Ben Berard had two goals and an assist, including the overtime winner, as the Powell River Kings went ahead in their series with a 3-2 win over the Nanaimo Clippers. Josh Coblenz and Carter Turnbull also chipped in with two-point nights for the Kings and goaltender Matteo Paler-Chow made 28 saves for the win. Nanaimo’s Cal Babych and David Silye each scored and Taz Burman stopped 29 of 32 shots in the loss.

Adam Marcoux stopped all 30 shots he faced to earn a shutout in the Trail Smoke Eater’s 4-0 win over the West Kelowna Warriors. Trail got points from nine different players, including goals from Troy Ring, Tyler Ghirardosi, Spencer McLean and Kale Howarth and have now scored 17 goals in three games in this series. Heading into tomorrow night’s game four, West Kelowna is in a must-win situation down 3-0 in the series and in danger of being swept.
