BCHL Playoff Update – Monday, March 19

Kurtis Chapman stopped 35 of 36 shots and was named first star of the game as the Victoria Grizzlies scored three third-period goals to come back to beat the Powell River Kings 3-1 and climb back into their best-of-seven series.

Powell River opened the scoring on a Ben Berard goal midway through the first period and carried that 1-0 lead into the third. Cameron Thompson tied the game for Victoria with a shorthanded goal five minutes into the period and the Grizzlies took the lead 10 minutes later on Marty Westhaver’s second of the playoffs. Thompson capped the Victoria comeback with his seventh of the postseason into an empty net for the 3-1 win.

Thompson’s two-point night gives him 10 in the playoffs which ties him for fifth in the league and his seventh goal is the second-most in the BCHL this postseason. After tonight’s solid performance, Chapman sees his save percentage climb to .945, which is the most among active goalies in the playoffs. Kings goalie Matteo Paler-Chow was solid again tonight, making 30 saves and being named third star in a losing effort.

The Grizzlies haven’t made it easy on themselves this playoffs as they came back from 3-0 down in the first round against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and will look to come back from down 2-0 in this series. Game four goes tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Powell River.

Jeffrey Stewart scored two goals and John Wesley added a goal and two assists as the Surrey Eagles took a 2-1 series lead over the Prince George Spruce Kings after a 5-1 home victory Monday night. Aaron White got Surrey on the board in the first period and Stewart extended the team’s lead to two on a goal 30 seconds into the second frame. Ben Brar replied two minutes later for Prince George, but Jackson Ross, Stewart and Wesley each scored to give the Eagles the 5-1 win. Surrey goalie Mario Cavaliere stopped 30 of 31 shots and was named the game’s first star. With his two points tonight, Wesley moves into a tie for second in BCHL playoff scoring with 11 points. Game four goes tomorrow night in Surrey at 7 p.m.
