Blue and White fit to be tied at Major Midget All-Star Game

The 2009 BC Hockey Major Midget League All-Star Game ended in a 5-5 tie between Team White and Team Blue at the Sungod Arena in North Delta.

The game was a huge success and was well-attended. The game offered a chance to recognize the premiere talent that the Major Midget League has to offer. The game was full of stars, but only three could be selected as Game Stars. They were:

First Star – Malcolm McKinney (West Vancouver, BC)
Second Star – Max French (Kelowna, BC)
Third Star – Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Burnaby, BC)

The game opened with a flurry of back and forth action and very few whistles in the first period. Team White’s Tristan Lowendberger (Coquitlam, BC) opened the scoring at 14:31 of the first period with the goal being assisted to the Silvan Harper. Team Blue responded late in the period when Dylan Willick (Prince George, BC) scored an unassisted goal a 3:49.

Malcolm McKinney restored the one goal lead for Team White when he scored just one minute after the Willick marker. Manraj Hayer (Vancouver, BC) and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins assisted on the goal.

The first intermission included the addition of the first portion of the Skills Competition. The winner of the faster skater went to Jamus Lane (Delta, BC) of the Greater Vancouver Canadians with a time of 14:15. The winner of the hardest shot went to North Island Silvertips star defenseman Jared Crema (Port Alberni, BC) with an impression mark of 90.09 miles per hour.

The second period picked up where the first left off with great back and forth action. Malcolm McKinney scored at 14:38 on a beautiful pass from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Team White added to their lead just 29 seconds later when Chase Kaiser (Duncan, BC) scored with assists going to Justin Kirsch and Josh Monk. Team Blue went unfazed as they answered Kaiser’s market one (1) minute later with a Brett Bulmer tally assisted by Keenan Bailey and Clayton Wright.

The second intermission had the second part of the skills competition, the shootout challenge. South Island Thunderbirds goaltender Brandon Glover (North Saanich, BC) won as top goaltender. Vancouver North West Giants forward Malcolm McKinney won for the shooting as he dazzled the crowd with his surreal puck handling skills. Team Blue opened the scoring early in the third period on the power play with a goal from Keenan Bailey, assisted by Spencer Humphries and Wesley Vannieuwenhuizen. Team White restored their two (2) goal lead at 14:19 with Malcolm McKinney’s third goal of the game with assists coming to Manraj Hayer and Josh Monk.

Team Blue was not to be outdone; Sean Pesut cut the lead to one (1) when he scored at 12:40. Wesley Vannieuwenhuizen and Chris Allbee assisted on the Pesut goal. Team Blue completed the comeback when Max French (Kelowna, BC) scored at 9:41 of the third period with assist to Brett Bulmer.
