Chiefs in win column at WCC

A shorthanded goal late in the second period from Jordan Kawaguchi was the winner for the Chilliwack Chiefs in a 2-1 triumph over the Portage Terriers Monday night at the Western Canada Cup.

After a scoreless first, Tommy Lee got the Chiefs on the board in the middle frame just past the five-minute mark. Portage responded a little over seven minutes later with a James McIsaac tally but with Justin Dixson serving a minor for high-sticking, Kawaguchi was able to grab the puck on the Chiefs penalty kill and beat the Terriers’ Kurtis Chapman with what would be the winner.

Portage posted a 10-6 shot advantage in the third but couldn’t get the equalizer past Chiefs goalie Mark Sinclair, who made 27 saves on the night for the win which was Chilliwack’s first ever in a Western Canada Cup tournament.

The Chiefs are back in action Tuesday against the host Penticton Vees while Portage has the day off.
