Doyle Cup Game 2 – Saints @ Wild

August Von Ungern’s third-period goal was the first of the game and stood up as the winner for the Wenatchee Wild in a 3-0 win over the Spruce Grove Saints that puts the Wild ahead two games to none in the best-of-seven Doyle Cup.

Despite a series of penalties assessed to both sides through 40 minutes of play, neither the Saints nor the Wild were able to capitalize on the man advantage and it remained scoreless through two periods of play.

Von Ungern’s winner came unassisted at the 11:29 mark of the final frame with Jasper Weatherby and AJ Vanderbeck both adding empty-net goals in the final minute to seal the win.

Austin Park was called on to make 15 saves in the third and 31 saves overall to record the shutout. The Saints outshot the Wild 31-27 for the game, one of the few times all season a visiting team has held an edge in the shot department in Wenatchee.

Game 3 of the series will be Tuesday, May 1 in Spruce Grove and the remainder of the series will be played there.
