RBC Cup Update: Vipers open tourney with win

The Vernon Vipers picked up where they left off on Sunday, posting their sixth consecutive victory after downing the Summerside Western Capitals by a 4-2 score in their opening game of the 2009 RBC Cup.

Vipers forward Braden Pimm set the tone in the afternoon match-up, opening the scoring just 13 seconds into the first period. Doyle Cup star Connor Jones then put the Pacific reps up by a pair when he scored his third shorthanded goal in as many games at the 6:40 mark of the opening frame. Mike Collins assisted on Pimm's opener while Kellen Jones and Mike Leidl picked up helpers on the Jones tally.

Vernon struck for another pair and a 4-0 lead midway through the second period when Connor Jones's tallied second of the night and Mike Collins hit the scoreboard just 26 seconds apart.

Summerside notched a pair in the third to draw within two goals, but the Vipers shut their opponents down the rest of the way. Andrew Hammond stopped 19 of the 21 shots sent his way by the Capitals while his teammates recorded 38 shots on Summerside netminder Alex Dupuis.

Vernon is next in action on Monday night when they face the Humboldt Broncos, who opened the tournament with a win over Victoria on Saturday night.

The Grizzlies are in action at 7:00 PM tonight when they host the OJHL champion Kingston Voyageurs.
