RBC Cup Update: Vipers top Grizzlies in OT

On a night when the British Columbia Hockey League's two top regular season teams went head to head at the 2009 Royal Bank Cup, it was only fitting that a mere 60 minutes of regulation time couldn't contain them.

Tied at 4-4 after the third period, Cole Ikkala notched the game winner 9:17 into overtime to secure a third tournament game in as many tries.

Chris Crowell opened the scoring for the Vipers late in the first period, but the Grizzlies stormed back with a foursome of goals from Cody Bremner, Brian Nugent, Sam Higgins and Jonathan Milhouse in the second en route to a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Undeterred, Vernon pulled within one six minutes into the third on a Kellen Jones marker and completed the comeback at the 18:12 mark on a goal from Mike Collins.

Andrew Hammond stopped 26 of 30 shots in the win while Grizzlies netminder turned aside 21 pucks in the loss.

Victoria returns to the ice for their final round-robin game against Summerside at 7:00 PM on Wednesday night, while the Vipers will enjoy a day off before attempting to go 4-0 against Kingston at 2:00 PM on Thursday.
