Schamerhorn Commits to VIU

With two years in Alberni Valley in the books, Bulldogs goaltender Carson Schamerhorn will be staying on Vancouver Island for the next stage of his hockey career.

The 5-foot-10 netminder has committed to the Vancouver Island University Mariners of the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) for the 2017-18 season. The Mariners will be entering their first year of competition in the BCIHL and are based out of Nanaimo, B.C.

Schamerhorn played in 45 games with the Bulldogs, posting an overall record of 13-23-2 with a 3.48 GAA and a save percentage of .888 during the two-year stretch. The 1997-born netminder logged a total of 2,380 minutes in the crease during his stint in Alberni Valley.

The product of Kelowna, B.C. is the first current player from the BCHL to commit to the Mariners, but is joined by BCHL alums Turner Popoff and Ryan Coghlan. Popoff last played in the league during the 2012-13 during with the Langley Rivermen, while Coghlan’s last season was with the Coquitlam Express in 2015-16.

VIU is the sixth member of the BCIHL, as the rest of league consists of Simon Fraser University, Trinity Western University, University of Victoria, Selkirk College and Eastern Washington University.
