Vees claim WCC’s final RBC Cup berth

Captain Nic Jones scored twice to lead the Penticton Vees to a 3-2 win over the Chilliwack Chiefs that gives Penticton the Western Canada Cup’s second berth to the RBC Cup national championship.

Chilliwack led 1-0 after one on a goal by their captain Jordan Kawaguchi but the Vees tied it with 16 seconds left in the second on Jones’ first of the game.

Jones notched his second at 6:44 of the third and Grant Cruikshank got the winner just over three minutes after that.

Will Calverley got one back for the Chiefs with just over five minutes to go but they could not find the tying goal. The Vees controlled the third outshooting the Chiefs 11-2.

Mat Robson made 16 saves for the win while Mark Sinclair stopped 26 for Chilliwack.

The Vees will head to Cobourg, Ont. at the end of the week to compete in the RBC Cup starting Saturday, May 13.

The Chiefs already know they will be in the 2018 RBC Cup as they are hosting the event.
