Around the BCHL: Saturday, Feb. 13

Cole Kehler made 33 saves and Nick Fidanza’s goal was the winner as the Merritt Centennials earned a 4-1 road win over the Victoria Grizzlies.

After a scoreless opening frame, Zach Court and Fidanza scored in rapid succession early in the second. Brett Stirling scoring the lone Grizz goal late in the period, making it 2-1 going to the third.

Nick Germain and Colin Grannary scored in the third to put the game away for the Cents. The win keeps Merritt within two points of Vernon for fourth in the Interior Division while Victoria remains two points up on Alberni Valley for fourth in the Island.

Matt Hudie scored twice for the Cowichan Valley Capitals and Storm Phaneuf made 38 saves, paving the way to a 3-1 home win over the Chilliwack Chiefs. Kale Kane got the visitors on the board in the second but Hudie replied with 17 seconds left in the middle frame to make it 1-1 heading to the third. Hudie’s second of the night, midway through the third, was the winner with Josh Adkins adding the final Caps tally late in the game.

Brandon Kegler made all 39 saves for his first BCHL shutout as the Salmon Arm Silverbacks downed the host Alberni Valley Bulldogs 3-0. Elijiah Barriga’s goal in the second would be all the offence needed but Jared Turcotte and Chase Zieky added on in the third.

Matthew Greenfield made 36 save and Brett Mennear had a goal and an assist as the West Kelowna Warriors hung on for a 3-2 home win over the Langley Rivermen. Mennear opened the scoring in the first and after Matty Saharchuk tied it for Langley in the second, Scott Allan and Quin Foreman provided the key goals for West Kelowna. Trevor Ayre got one back for Langley in the third but they couldn’t get the equalizer past Greenfield.

Troy Conzo’s goal at 2:02 of overtime secured a 3-2 win for the Wenatchee Wild over the visiting Prince George Spruce Kings. The Wild’s August Von Ungern and PG’s Kyle Johnson traded tallies in the second with Cavin Tilsley of PG and the Wild’s Tyler Rockwell doing the same in the third, setting the stage for OT. Liam McCloskey made 40 saves for PG while Garrett Nieto needed to make just eight for the Wild.

Scott Conway scored twice in the third period, lifting the Penticton Vees to a 5-2 home win over the Trail Smoke Eaters. Ross Armour opened the scoring in the first for Trail but Tyson Jost tied the game shortly after. In the second, Connor Brown-Maloski briefly put the Smokies ahead again before Dante Fabbro tied it 2-2. Conway’s pair came less than two minutes apart in the third with Easton Brodzinksi adding an empty-net goal.
