BCHL grad Cheverie nets WCHA Defensive honours

University of Denver goaltender Marc Cheverie (Nanaimo Clippers/BCHL), who backstopped the Pioneers to a two-game sweep over visiting league rival Minnesota Duluth last weekend, is the Red Baronr WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for November 11-17.

A 6-3, 180-pound sophomore from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, Cheverie allowed just one even-strength goal in the two games, posted four shutout periods, and stopped 61 of 63 shots on goal for a .968 saves percentage as Denver won 5-1 over the Bulldogs last Friday (Nov. 7) and 2-1 last Saturday (Nov. 8).

He stopped 34 of 35 shots on goal in the series opener and led DU’s penalty-killing units to a 5-for-5 effort. Cheverie then came back last Saturday to stop 27 of 28 UMD shots on goal, allowing only a power-play goal late in the second period.

On the season, Cheverie sports a 6-2-1 record, a 2.54 goals-against average and .918 save percentage while starting all nine games between the pipes. He is a NHL draft choice of Florida.

Denver, now 6-2-1 overall, is ranked No. 4 in this week’s national polls.

The Pioneers travel to St. Cloud State for a two-game WCHA series on Nov. 14-15.

Also nominated this week were: Brian Connelly, D, CC; Alex Kangas, G, UM; Brad Miller, F, UND; Chris Hepp, D, SCSU; and Scott Gudmandson, G, UW.
