BCHL great Brett Hull gets call from the Hall

Brett Hull, the most prolific scorer ever to compete in the British Columbia Hockey League, has been announced as a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s induction class for 2009 following a stellar National Hockey League career.

Hull still holds the BCHL record for goals and points scored in a single season with 105 and 188 respectively with the Penticton Knights during the 1983/84 campaign. Just months later Hull was drafted by the Calgary Flames, where he played from 1985 to 1988 following two seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Hull totalled 1391 points in the NHL over 19 seasons spent with the Flames, St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings and Phoenix Coyotes. His 741 career goals rank third behind Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe. Hull scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal for the Dallas Stars in 1999 and lifted the trophy again three years later with the Detroit Red Wings.

During the 1990/91 season, Hull scored 86 goals and 131 points and was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league’s Most Valuable Player. He was an eight-time All-Star Game participant and was named an NHL First Team All-Star on three occasions. His many scoring accomplishments include tying Wayne Gretzky’s record for game-winning goals scored in the NHL playoffs with 24.

Hull’s induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame will be made official at a ceremony in Toronto on November 9th. Fellow inductees in 2009 will include Steve Yzerman, Brian Leetch and Luc Robitaiile.

“On behalf of the British Columbia Hockey League, I would like to congratulate Brett on this tremendous honour,” Commissioner John Grisdale says. “His career at all levels of hockey was one of the finest ever and he is fully deserving of the sport’s highest honour.”
