The BC Hockey League has tied its previous recorded of NCAA Division I commitments with 173 committed athletes in the league during the 2021-22 season
The record was first set during the 2019-20 campaign.
“The league is thrilled to see our college commitments back to the level they were before the pandemic,” said Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Commissioner Steven Cocker. “This goes to show that the work being done by our teams, specifically our coaches and development staff working with the players, in addition to our owners providing state-of-the-art developmental resources, is paying off in a big way. Most importantly, it demonstrates that the effort put in by our athletes is being recognized at the highest levels of college hockey.”
77 of these players earned their commitment during the 2021-22 season, while the rest committed in prior BCHL seasons or with their previous teams.
Facts & Figures:
- 380 BCHL alumni were on NCAA Division I rosters during the 2021-22 season
- Over the past four years, 56 per cent of eligible BCHL players have advanced to the NCAA
- BCHL commitment numbers have grown steadily over the past decade with an increase every year from the 2015-16 season to 2019-20 before the league was interrupted by the pandemic.
- In addition to tying the NCAA Division I commitment record, the league also tied its overall commitment record with a combined 196 athletes committed to NCAA Division I and III, U Sports and other divisions across Canada.
Any players that committed after June 1, 2022 will be counted towards next year’s totals, except those who will begin their college careers this fall.
