Brushett’s hat trick upends Vernon

Ryan Brushett scored a hat trick for the Surrey Eagles, including the equalizing and winning goals in the third period, to lead his team to a 5-4 road win over his former club the Vernon Vipers.

Vernon led 2-0 after one on goals by Adam Panacci and Michael Ufberg. Brushett got his first goal to get Surrey on the board in the second and after Jimmy Lambert had restored the two-goal edge for the Vipers, Surrey drew even on tallies by Jackson Ross and Jordan Robert.

Sol Seibel gave Vernon back the lead early in the third but Brushett scored his second to tie it on the power play and he provided the game-winner with 1:18 to go in regulation.

Nicholas Wicks’ goal at 2:47 of double overtime lifted the Merritt Centennials to a 5-4 road win over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. Josh Latta scored twice in the first to put the ‘Backs up 2-1 after one but in the second, Merritt got goals from Zach Zorn and Sam Miller to take a 3-2 advantage to the third. After Nick Unruh scored to tie it in the final frame, Henry Cleghorn scored what looked like the decisive tally for the Cents but Trevor Adams scored with 1:47 remaining to force OT. Wicks’ winner came after 2:13 of 3-on-3 play in double overtime. Jared Breitkreuz made 37 saves for the win while Bo Didur stopped 32 for Salmon Arm.

Goals 25 seconds apart in the third period by Matthew Campese and Chase Dubois allowed the West Kelowna Warriors to come back and defeat the visiting Cowichan Valley Capitals 3-2. Bennett Norlin opened the scoring for West Kelowna in the first but Ty Pochipinski replied to tie it for the Caps late in the opening frame. Azzaro Tinling put the Caps ahead with the only goal of the second period but West Kelowna notched the tying a winning goals in quick succession early in the final frame. Cole Demers made 27 saves for the win.

Sam Morton’s unassisted power-play goal just past the midway mark of the second period was the winner for the Wenatchee Wild in a 4-2 home victory over the Penticton Vees. After Josh Arnold opened the scoring in the first for the Wild, Penticton responded to take the lead on goals by Jack Barnes and Luke Reid but they would be the only Vees goals on the night. AJ Vanderbeck tied the game in the second and Morton’s winner came at 10:08 of the second. Jasper Weatherby finished up the scoring with a power-play marker 34 seconds into the third.

A three-goal first period for the Langley Rivermen was the difference in a 4-3 road win over the Chilliwack Chiefs. Eric Butte, Angus Crookshank and Ethan Leyh all tallied in the opening frame to put the visitors ahead by three and in the second, the winning goal came off the stick of Carter Stephenson 2:32 in on the power play. Harrison Blaisdell got one back for the Chiefs later in the second, also on the man advantage. In the third, Chilliwack tried to rally and got goals from Adam Berg and Bryan Allbee, shorthanded, to get within one but that was as close as it got. Braedon Fleming made 32 saves for the win.

After a scoreless first, the Alberni Valley Bulldogs tallied twice in the second with Cayden Kraus and Christian Simeone doing the damage prompting the Prince George Spruce Kings to make a goaltending change. They promptly replied with two goals of their own to tie it courtesy of Nolan Welsh and Ethan de Jong. In the third, de Jong and Isaac Tonkin-Palmer swapped tallies to make it 3-3 and overtime solved nothing for the two sides. John Hawthorne made 32 saves for the Bulldogs while Brad Cooper and Evan DeBrouwer combined for 30 saves for PG.

Max Crozier’s first BCHL goal wound up being the winner for the Nanaimo Clippers in a 4-3 home win over the Coquitlam Express. With the score 0-0 after one, the Clippers tallied three in the second with Jamie Collins, Brady Lynn and Tristan Crozier providing the offence. Coquitlam got on the board in the third on a Christian Sanda power-play goal but Max Crozier restored the Clips edge just 1:02 later. Aiden Wagner got another for Coquitlam and they got within one on an Eric Linell goal with 14 seconds left but couldn’t find the goal to force OT. Taz Burman made 24 saves for the win in his first BCHL game.
