Chapman’s stingy play earns him BCHLPOW

Victoria Grizzlies goaltender Kurtis Chapman has been named the BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 11, the league announced Monday.

After going down 3-0 in their first-round series with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, Chapman backstopped the Grizzlies to four straight wins to complete the comeback Sunday afternoon and advance to the second round. He got his first start of the playoffs in game three where he stopped 35 of 38 shots in an overtime loss. From there, the 20-year-old shut the door on the Bulldogs and only gave up five goals in the next four games, including a 31-save performance in a 3-1 game-seven win. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound goalie from Airdrie, Alta. has a playoff record of 4-1, with a .953 save percentage (2nd highest in the league) and a goals-against average of 1.52. In his five starts, Chapman stopped 163 of 171 shots and was named one of the three stars in four out of five games.

The Island Division champion Grizzlies will host the Powell River Kings in the opener of the second round of the BCHL playoffs starting this week.
