Chen signs with Alabama Huntsville

Cowichan Valley Capitals defenceman Simon Chen has committed to play for the University of Alabama Huntsville Chargers for the 2018-19 season.

Chen played over 100 regular-season games in the BCHL and amassed 15 points over two seasons with the Capitals. The 20-year-old from Beijing, China also represented his country in Division II Group B of the IIHF World U18 Championships in 2015.

Chen joins a Chargers team that plays in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) along with Alaska Anchorage, Alaska, Bemidji State, Bowling Green, Ferris State, Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, Minnesota State and Northern Michigan.

Last season, Alabama Huntsville finished seventh in their conference and lost in the quarterfinals to Northern Michigan in the WCHA tournament.

The Chargers 2017-18 roster featured former BCHL players Kurt Gosselin and Mark Sinclair.

Victoria Grizzlies defenceman Dayne Finnson is also committed to play for Alabama Huntsville next season.
