CJAHL NOTEBOOK – Aug. 14, 2005

The 2005-06 Canadian Junior 'A' Hockey League season has been launched with an Aug. 13 Ligue de Hockey Junior AAA du Quebec exhibition game.

The Inouk de Granby played the defending champion Mustangs de Vaudreuil in Vaudreuil to start the Quebec exhibition schedule.

The Quebec regular season will open with four games Sept. 3 in Saint-Jerome. Three games are scheduled Sept. 4, also in Saint-Jerome.

The Northern Ontario Junior 'A' Hockey League regular schedule will start Sept. 9 when the Northern Michigan Black Bears play the Manitoulin Islanders in Little Current, Ont.

The Maritime Junior 'A' Hockey League regular season will begin with three games Sept. 15.

Also, Sasha Grenier-Pokulok and Myles Rumsey were overlooked in the CJAHL media release about CJAHL alumni selected in the National Hockey League entry draft.

Grenier-Pokulok, a member of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League all-rookie team in 2003-04, was chosen in the first round, 14th overall, by the Washington Capitals.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Grenier-Pokulok was a freshman with the Cornell Big Red of the Eastern College Athletic Conference in 2004-05. Grenier-Pokulok, 19, played for the Notre Dame Hounds in the SJHL.

Rumsey was taken in the seventh round, 221st overall, by the Calgary Flames. He played for the Winnipeg South Blues of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League before advancing to the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League.

On another note, the CJAHL established a single-season record with 280 players from the 2004-05 season committed to National Collegiate Athletic Association schools in 2005-06 and 2006-07.

LA LIGUE DE HOCKEY JUNIOR AAA DU QUEBEC

The defending champion Mustangs de Vaudreuil will be among eight teams playing on the opening day of la Ligue de Hockey Junior AAA du Quebec regular schedule Sept. 3 in Saint-Jerome.

Les Lions du College Saint-Lawrence will play Vaudreuil. Les Cobras de Terrebonne will play les Braves de Valleyfield, le Titan du College Lafleche will play les Cougars du College Champlain and les Pantheres de Saint-Jerome will play les Inouk de Granby.

The Granby franchise was transferred from Coaticook and was previously known as les Frontaliers de Coaticook.

Les Patriotes de Saint-Eustache will play les Maroons de Lachine, l'Action du CEGEP Regional a Joliette will play College Francais de Longueuil and the expansion Multiconcessionnaire de Saint-Felicien will play les Condors de Kahnawake, also in Saint-Jerome, on Sept. 4.

Six games are scheduled Feb. 26 to complete the regular season.

NORTHERN ONTARIO JUNIOR 'A' HOCKEY LEAGUE

Four games are scheduled Sept. 9-11 during the opening weekend of the Northern Ontario Junior 'A' Hockey League regular season.

The Northern Michigan Black Bears, Manitoulin Islanders and Blind River Beavers will each play twice to launch the schedule.

The defending champion North Bay Skyhawks will play an interlocking schedule with Central Junior Hockey League teams. North Bay's first game against a CJHL team will be Oct. 7 in Kanata against the Stallions.

The regular season will conclude with two games March 11.

MARITIME JUNIOR 'A' HOCKEY LEAGUE

The Maritime Junior 'A' Hockey League regular season will start Sept. 15 with games in Moncton, N. B., Antigonish and New Glasgow, N. S.

The Summerside, P. E. I., Western Capitals will play the Gagnon Beavers in Moncton. The Amherst, N. S., Ramblers will be in Antigonish to play the Bulldogs and the Charlottetown, P. E. I., Abbies will play the Pictou County Weeks Crushers in New Glasgow.

Exhibition games will begin Aug. 28. The regular schedule will conclude with three games March 4.

BRITISH COLUMBIA HOCKEY LEAGUE

The British Columbia Hockey League regular season will start with six games Sept. 9.

The Williams Lake Timberwolves will be in Vernon to play the Vipers, the Chilliwack Chiefs will play the defending champion Surrey Eagles in Surrey, the Burnaby Express will be in Langley to play the Hornets, the Alberni Valley Bulldogs will play the Nanaimo Clippers in Nanaimo, the Quesnel Millionaires will be in Penticton to play the Vees and the Prince George Spruce Kings will play the Merritt Centennials in Merritt.

The Victoria Salsa, Cowichan Valley Capitals, Powell River Kings, Trail Smoke Eaters and Salmon Arm Silverbacks will open Sept. 10. Alberni Valley will be in Victoria, Cowichan Valley will play in Powell River, Williams Lake will be in Trail and Salmon Arm will play in Penticton.

MANITOBA JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE

Manitoba Junior Hockey League teams will play exhibition games against eight Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League teams when the Manitoba exhibition season starts Aug. 30.

The Notre Dame Hounds, defending champion Yorkton Terriers, Melfort Mustangs, La Ronge Ice Wolves, Melville Millionaires, Flin Flon, Man., Bombers, Nipawin Hawks and Estevan Bruins of the SJHL have exhibition games against Manitoba teams.

ALBERTA JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the British Columbia Hockey League, Battlefords North Stars and Kindersley Klippers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League will play games against Alberta Junior Hockey League teams during the 42-game AJHL exhibition schedule beginning Aug. 23.

The Drumheller Dragons will be in Salmon Arm for a Sept. 3 game.

Battlefords, the Lloydminster Bobcats and Bonnyville Pontiacs will play Sept. 3-4 in Wainwright, Alta.

The Canmore Eagles and Brooks Bandits will play Sept. 3 and Sept. 5, respectively, in Kindersley.
