Coastal Playoff Update: Eagles ahead in close race to the second round

Cowichan Valley moves on to the second round to face RBC Cup host team Victoria, while Surrey and Langley are still left to duke it out tonight for a spot in the second round of the coastal mainland playoffs.

Langley (1) at Surrey (2) — 7 PM, South Surrey Arena

The Eagles will have a chance to put away the series after gaining a game advantage over the Chiefs. Though the Chiefs have home ice advantage tonight, the Eagles are coming off last nights over time win with momentum.

Surrey was up 1-0 after the first but was overtaken in the second when Langley scored two unanswered goals.

The third went back and forth with Surrey tieing it all up on a power play with less than five minutes to go.

Both netminders had their workcut out for them as Surrey posted 50 shots on goal and Langley gave the Eagles' Tommy Tartaglione a workout with 52.

Anthony Bardaro netted the game winner in OT allowing the Eagles to pull ahead in the series and giving them the opportunity to end the series tonight.

Cowichan Valley (3) eliminates Naniamo (0)

Cowichan will be moving on to the second round of playoffs with a clean record after their third and final win over the Naniamo Clippers by a score of 5-2.

Penalties ended up hurting the Clippers last night, when three of the Capitals five goals came on power plays. Mickey Spencer posted two on those power plays.

Cowichan will now move on to play Victoria their series starting Friday, March 6.

Of the 12 times these two teams met in the regular season Cowichan came out on top five times, but lost all three of their last encounters with the Grizzles.
