Just four seasons removed from being the captain of the Surrey Eagles, Danton Heinen now has two NHL goals under his belt and has been one of the most productive forwards on the Boston Bruins.
The Langley native got his first NHL goal Thursday night and added another later as he had both Bruins goals in a 2-1 victory over the visiting San Jose Sharks.
The opener was the result of Heinen going to the net and finishing a rebound past Sharks goalie and North Vancouver native Martin Jones after a shot by David Backes.
“It was pretty cool,” Heinen said to NHL.com. “Obviously, it’s something you dream of your whole life, and you kind of just go into shock for a bit there. It was awesome.”
“Every shift you just want to do everything you can,” said Heinen. “You don’t know how long you have up here. You have to take it day-by-day and try to put your best foot forward everyday and work as hard as you can. That’s just what I’m trying to do.”
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound forward put up 29 goals and 33 assists for 62 points in 57 games with the Surrey Eagles in the 2013-14 BCHL season. He then enjoyed a successful two-year stint at the University of Denver where he registered 36-57-93 in 81 NCAA games. He turned pro after the 2016 season and now appears ready to cement his spot in the Bruins lineup.
