Gagne helps Warriors down Sweden’s U17s

Jordan Gagne snapped a 3-3 tie late in the third period and added another to give the Westside Warriors a 5-3 victory in a B.C. Hockey League exhibition game against Team Sweden’s Under 17 national team Tuesday night.

The Warriors led 3-2 after two periods before Team Sweden-featuring the best 16-year-old players in Sweden-tied the game at 3-3 on a goal by Gabriel Landeskog with under five minutes to play.

That set the stage for Gagne’s game winner, a beautiful snap shot into the top corner that thrilled a crowd of over 1,200 at Royal LePage Place in Westside.

Vince Mihalek gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead midway through the second period on a backhand after a solid forecheck form Matt Betker. Landeskog, the Swedish captain, had tied the game earlier in the period.

Team Sweden opened the scoring in the game when Victor Ohman scored. Westside answered back with first period goals by Cory Pritz and Alex Grieve to lead 2-1 after the first period.

It was the second of three exhibition games Team Sweden will play. They play in Salmon Arm Wednesday night after losing 2-1 to Vernon on Sunday.

The Warriors host Salmon Arm at Royal LePage Place at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
