Galajda earns season’s first scholarship

GalajdaVictoria Grizzlies goalie Matthew Galajda has taken care of an important piece of business for himself and the season hasn’t even started yet.

Galajda has committed to play NCAA Div. I hockey at Ivy League Cornell University. He’ll head to school and play for the Big Red starting in the 2017-18 season.

A product of Aurora, Ont., Galajda came to the BCHL last season and posted an 18-22 mark in his rookie campaign. He registered a .910 save percentage, a 2.70 g0als-against average and four shutouts.

Last season, Cornell had three BCHL alums on their roster in Reece Willcox, Johnny Knisley and Mitch Gillam.

The Big Red plays in the NCAA’s ECAC Hockey conference along with the other Ivy League schools Harvard, Brown, Yale, Princeton and Dartmouth. Also competing in ECAC Hockey are Quinnipiac, St. Lawrence, RPI, Colgate, Union and Clarkson.

This commitment marks the first of the 2016-17 season for the BCHL. It was announced earlier this week the league had established a record number of college commitments in 2015-16 with 148
