Grizzlies netminder Grieco named Player of the Week

Victoria Grizzlies goaltender Anthony Grieco has been named the BC Hockey League's Player of the Week for the week of December 8th to 14th, the league announced Monday.

Grieco allowed just one goal in three games last week, sandwiching shutouts against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Langley Chiefs around a Friday night win over the Nanaimo Clippers.

On Tuesday, the 20-year old turned aside 25 shots against the Bulldogs, earning second star honours on the road. He followed up that performance by allowing a single goal and picking up first-star recognition in a 22-save effort against Nanaimo. Grieco capped the week with his second shutout in a 5-0 victory over Langley on Sunday.

In total, Grieco posted three wins and a 0.33 goals-against average. His save-percentage was a  tremendous .986 based on 68 saves on 69 shots.

The Brampton, Ontario native joined the Grizzlies from the Mississauga-St. Michael's Majors of the Ontario Hockey League at the beginning of the 2008/09 season. His previous Junior A experience came with Wellington of the OPJHL before earning a scholarship to the University of North Dakota.

Grieco's strong play this season has earned him a spot on the Coastal Conference squad for the 2009 BCHL All-Star Game in Vernon.

The Victoria Grizzlies are next in action on Saturday when they host the Prince George Spruce Kings at Bear Mountain Arena.
