Harpur to head homeward for NCAA hockey

harpur-fullCowichan Valley Capitals defenceman and captain Chris Harpur will make a homecoming of sorts when he reports to campus next season.

The native of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. has accepted an offer and will compete for Niagara University which is a half-hour drive from his hometown, depending on the wait at the border crossing.

Harpur is the first BCHL player to commit to Niagara in several seasons; the Purple Eagles currently have no BCHL alums on their roster.

The blueliner is in his third BCHL season and second with the Caps. This season, Harpur leads the Cowichan back end with 24 points in 32 games and has 12 points in his last 12 games. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound rearguard has 10 goals and 49 assists in 146 career games.

Niagara competes in the NCAA’s Division I Atlantic Hockey Association. The other teams in their conference are Air Force, American International College, Bentley, Army West Point, Robert Morris, RIT, Mercyhurst, Holy Cross, Sacred Heart and Canisius.
