Jandric, Scarfo, Gosselin earn POWs

Another week and another batch of BCHL grads have snapped up conference awards in college hockey.

Vernon Vipers alum Steven Jandric of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) rookie of the week after posting four points in a pair of wins over state rival Alaska-Anchorage. The Prince George, B.C. native had a goal and two helpers in a 6-2 Nanoonks win in the first game and added a helper on the game winner the next night in a 3-2 victory.

Former Powell River Kings standout Ryan Scarfo, now a senior at Union College, earned the ECAC Hockey player of the week recognition as he notched two goals and three assists in helping the Dutchmen to a pair of road wins against non-conference opposition. The native of North Chelmsford, Mass. had two assists and a 2nd Star nod in a 6-1 win over RIT and followed that with a two goals and one helper and 1st Star in a 5-1 win at Niagara.

Back to the WCHA, there was another BCHL alum recognized as Alberni Valley Bulldogs grad Kurt Gosselin took the defensive player of the week award. The product of Brighton, Mich. recorded three points and six shot blocks in helping the University of Alabama-Huntsville to a split on the road against Michigan Tech. Gosselin scored in a 4-2 win in the first game of the set and added two helpers the next night in a 5-4 defeat. The Junior blueliner had 11 shots on goal for the weekend.
