MacMillan, Heinen pick up weekly awards in NCHC

The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) named its players of the week Monday and two BCHL alums were recognized.

Former Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Penticton Vees forward Mark MacMillan of the University of North Dakota took the offensive player of the week nod and former Surrey Eagles captain Danton Heinen of the University of Denver was named rookie of the week.

MacMillan, a Montreal Canadiens draft pick, scored five goals and two assists in a weekend sweep of Colorado College. He tallied twice Friday and followed up with a hat trick as part of a five-point night the next night.

The senior, a native of Penticton, scored 47 goals and 90 assists for 137 points in 99 career BCHL games between Alberni Valley and Penticton.

Heinen, drafted in June by the Boston Bruins, got the first points of his NCAA career as Denver swept RPI. The Langley native assisted on the Pioneers first goal of the season which turned out to be the game-winner in a 3-0 win Friday. He topped that with two helpers in a 4-1 win the next night and finished +2 on the weekend.

Heinen scored 29 goals and 33 assists for 62 points in 57 games last season with Surrey.
