Melaragni commits to Canisius

David Melaragni has been a key contributor for the Cowichan Valley Capitals and head coach Mike Vandekamp this season. This comes as no surprise to his coach since Vandekamp had Melaragni on his blueline last year when they were both with the Nanaimo Clippers and brought him over to the Capitals with him in the offseason. The move to Cowichan is certainly paying dividends as Melaragni is enjoying a career year which has to him announcing his commitment to the Canisius College Golden Griffins for the 2019-20 season.

Melaragni, who is from Philidelphia, Pa., is enjoying a breakout season in his second year in the league. He has posted career-highs in every offensive category as he has 12 goals and 36 assists for 48 points in 56 games. He leads his team in points and is the third-highest scoring defenceman in the league. Since starting his BCHL career last year, the 20-year-old has not missed a game, totaling 82 points (20 goals, 62 assists) in 114 regular-season contests. He also added three points in six playoff games last year with Nanaimo.

Canisius is located in Buffalo, N.Y. and plays in the Atlantic Hockey Conference against Air Force, American International, Army West Point, Bentley, Holy Cross, Mercyhurst, Niagara, Robert Morris. Rochester Institute of Technology and Sacred Heart.

This year’s Golden Griffins roster features BCHL alums Matt Stief, Kevin Obssuth, Derek Hamelin, Matt Hoover and Nick Hutchison.

Alberni Valley Bulldogs forwards Keaton Mastrodonato and Ryan Miotto are also committed to Canisius for the 2019-20 season.
