Newsome commits to SFU for 2018-19 season

Former Coquitlam Express forward Mitch Newsome has committed to play for Simon Fraser University (SFU) next season.

The BCHL veteran put up 71 points in 146 regular-season games over his 5 seasons in the league, splitting time with the Penticton Vees, Langley Rivermen, Salmon Arm Silverbacks and the Express. Newsome also played in 21 playoff games, the majority of which came while playing in Penticton.

He joins an SFU team that went 8-16-0-1 last year and finished fifth in the six-team British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL), missing the playoffs by one point. SFU competes against Trinity Western University, Selkirk College, Vancouver Island University, the University of Victoria and Eastern Washington University.

SFU’s projected 2018-19 roster is set to feature several former BCHLers, including fellow Express alums Brendan Lamont and Mathew Berry-Lamontagna as well as former Chilliwack Chiefs forward Jaret Babych.
