Pair of third period goals lead Trail to comeback win

The Trail Smoke Eaters rebounded from a loss in Williams Lake on Friday, scoring twice in the third period en route to a 4-3 comeback win over the Prince George Spruce Kings.

Jesse Niemi and Darnell Dyck slotted home for the Smoke Eaters in the final frame to list Trail, who had opened the scoring just 41 seconds into regulation on a Nick Sandor effort.

The Spruce Kings responded quickly, however, as Jonathan Gibson and Lyndon Martell, on a power-play, put their team ahead at the end of one period. Mitch Kaufmann evened the score early in the second period, but another Spruce Kings power play goal put Trail in a hold after 40 minutes.

The Smokies outshot their hosts by a 35-30 margin on the evening, with Garrett Beckwith picking up the win with a 27-save performance. Prince George starter Steve Papciak faced 35 shots and took the loss.

Trail now heads to Quesnel for a Sunday meeting that will end their three-game Northern road swing, while the Spruce Kings face that same Millionaires squad on home ice on Tuesday.
