Petan a finalist in race for Hobey

A former Coquitlam Express captain is one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, given annually to the top player in NCAA men’s hockey.

Michigan Tech Huskies senior captain Alex Petan, who played three years with the Express, led the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) in conference scoring with 16 goals and 29 points. His overall stats this season to date are 18-15-33 in 36 games.

The Delta, B.C. native is the only Canadian finalist for the award. He was named the WCHA Player of the Year and also was a member of the First Team-all conference squad.  His play helped the Huskies to first place in the WCHA standings. They’ll face off against Ferris State in the conference semifinals this Friday.

Petan has played 152 games over his four seasons with the Huskies, scoring 59 goals and 135 points. The 23-year-old played the 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons with the Express, appearing in 155 games where he registered 54 goals and 128 points. He was named 2012 Coastal Conference MVP.

The 10 Hobey Baker finalists are selected after polling of all 60 NCAA Div. I hockey head coaches and by online fan balloting.  From March 17-27, the Selection Committee – together with fan balloting on the award’s Facebook page and website  will narrow it down further. On March 31, the Hobey Hat Trick (the three finalists,) will be announced and the winner will be named on April 8 in Tampa Bay, Fla., the site of this year’s NCAA Frozen Four tournament.
