Playoff recap – April 1

Nolan Welsh scored twice, including the game-winner, against his former team as he led the Prince George Spruce Kings to a 4-2 road win over the Victoria Grizzlies that gives PG a 3-0 series lead.

After a scoreless first period, it was Grizzlies forward Riley Hughes who opened the scoring at 1:56 of the second but the lead was short lived as Lucas Vanroboys scored to make it 1-1 just 30 seconds later. Layton Ahac scored exactly three minutes after Vanroboys’ tying goal and Welsh, who played 52 games for Victoria in the 2016-17 season, added his first of the game to make it a two-goal Spruce Kings advantage.

Kyle McGrath tallied for Victoria on the power play late in the second to get the Grizzlies within one going to the third. But in the final frame, the lone goal would come off the stick of Welsh on the power play at 3:44. Logan Neaton wound up with 27 saves for the win while Kurtis Chapman made 42 stops in defeat.

Game 4 of the series is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Victoria.
