Powell River’s Watson and Garbowsky commit to RIT

The Powell River Kings Junior `A’ Hockey Club is pleased to announce that goaltender Josh Watson and centre Matt Garbowsky have committed to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology. The NCAA Division One RIT Tigers play in the Atlantic Conference.

“I’m grateful I was given the opportunity to come to Powell River and earn a spot on this team,” said Watson. “This is a great team in a great league that gets lots of exposure. I’d like to thank my coaches and parents for helping me through this process.”

The Lititz, Pennsylvania native made an immediate impact with the Kings earning British Columbia Hockey League Player of the Week honors at the beginning of October and currently owns a 9-4-1 record with a 1.96 goals against average and a .929 save percentage.

“I’m happy I made the decision to come to the Kings and the BCHL,” Garbowsky said. “It’s great to get this done early so I can now concentrate on making the Kings a first place team.”

Garbowsky, hailing from St. George, Ontario has established himself as a solid and reliable two way centre. Matt currently sits fourth in Kings scoring.

“Josh and Mat and important pieces to our team and I’m not surprised RIT committed to them,” stated Kings Head Coach and General Manager Kent Lewis.  “They are both excellent students and they will be a great fit to the school and their hockey program.

Watson and Garbowsky join Kings Captain Mat Bodie who have received NCAA Division 1 scholarships already this season. Bodie will join brother Kyle at Union College next season.
