RBC Cup Update: Last second goal sinks Grizzlies

Humboldt Broncos forward Scott Schroeder scored on a shorthanded breakaway with one second remaining in regulation to resign the Victoria Grizzlies to a 2-1 defeat in the opening game of the 2009 RBC Cup on Saturday.

With the Grizzlies on a late-game power-play courtesy a tripping penalty to Nick Kalnicki, Schroeder capitalized on a neutral zone turnover and deked Grizzlies netminder Anthony Grieco to seal the win.

Following a scoreless first period, Victoria captain Brian Nugent put his team on the board in the second, ripping a wrist shot over Broncos goaltender Mathieu Larochelle. Nugent's goal came on a power play with assists going to Lee Baldwin and Evan Pighin.

Humboldt's Spencer Braatan evened the game at 1-1 less than two minutes into the final frame, puncing on a loose puck to beat Grieco. The teams then traded third period power-plays, but ultimately it was Schroeder's shorthanded tally that proved the difference.

The Grizzlies held a distinct advantage in shots on goal, pouring 36 on Larochelle, while Humboldt replied with 26 pucks sent Grieco's way.

Victoria will have the opportunity to jump into the win column on Sunday evening when they face the Kingston Voyageurs, the Central region representatives, at 7:00 PM. BCHL counterparts Vernon begin their tournament a few hours earlier, taking on East reps Summerside at 2:00 PM.
