The University of Vermont hockey team generally sees its goalie tandem split duties more or less down the middle but last weekend, Surrey Eagles alum Michael Santaguida was given the reins and he made the most of the assignment.
The Mississauga, Ont. product allowed just one goal in two starts against conference foe Merrimack and posted his third shutout of the season as the Catamounts took three of four points from the Warriors. For his effort, the 21-year-old shared the Hockey East conference's defensive player of the week award with UMass netminder Steven Mastalerz.
Santguida stopped all but one shot in a 2-1 win Friday and followed up with a flawless performance in a rare 0-0 tie.
Santaguida's .935 save percentage and 1.76 goals-against average are both good for fifth in NCAA hockey.
With the Surrey Eagles in the 2012-13 season, Santaguida backstopped the team to the Fred Page Cup BCHL title. He went 29-10-3 and posted a .933 save percentage in the regular season to go along with two shutouts and a 2.28 goals-against average which won him the Top Goaltender Award.
He went 14-3 in the postseason with a 1.65 GAA and a .955 save percentage, adding four more shutouts.
