Smith rock-solid for Kings, earns POW

Powell River Kings goalie Jeff Smith has been named the BCHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 7, the league announced Tuesday.

Smith allowed just one goal in three games, making 75 saves on 76 shots for a 0.987 save percentage in backstopping the Kings to three wins on home ice. The Maple Ridge, B.C. product was 1st Star in a 4-0 win over Cowichan Valley where he turned aside 21 shots his third shutout of the season. He earned his fourth shutout the next night, a 25-save outing in a 7-0 win over Cowichan where he was named 3rd Star. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound netminder stopped 29 of 30 to conclude the week with a 1st-Star nod in a 4-1 win over Victoria.

The 20-year-old Smith is now tied for the league lead in shutouts and is third in the BCHL with a 0.928 save percentage on the season.
