Jake Smith scored four times more goals this season than last and more than doubled his overall points output.
The surge in production has helped him earn an NCAA Div. I future at Michigan State University.
Smith posted 32 goals and 26 assists for 58 points while playing all 58 games for the Chilliwack Chiefs this season. This after an eight-goal, 25-point freshman BCHL campaign a year ago.
A native of East Amherst, N.Y., Smith earned the first BCHL Player of the Week of the New Year after he posted four goals and four assists in a three-game span to conclude 2016. In his 114-game BCHL career, Smith has tallied 40 goals and 43 assists.
At Michigan State, Smith will join a Spartans program that competes in the Big 10 conference, which right now has just six teams in men’s hockey with Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The Spartans’ current roster includes BCHL alums Taro Hirose and Damian Chrcek. Smith is the only current BCHLer committed to Michigan State.
