Smith signs with St. Cloud State

Though he’s now focused on the BCHL postseason, it has to feel a bit like mission accomplished on another front for Powell River Kings goaltender Jeff Smith.

The Maple Ridge, B.C. native has accepted an offer to St. Cloud State University to play for the Huskies starting next season. This after he played his freshman NCAA season last year at UMass-Lowell before returning to Powell River for his final Junior season in hopes of finding a new opportunity.

Smith has put together a 25 -12-1 mark this season along with a .927 save percentage, a 2.48 goals-against average and he tied for the BCHL lead with five shutouts.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound netminder is one of five current BCHLers committed to SCSU for coming seasons along with Zach Driscoll, Dennis Cholowski, Josh Blanchard and Easton Brodzinski.

St. Cloud State plays in the NCAA’s Div. I National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) along with Western Michigan, North Dakota, Denver, Nebraska-Omaha, Colorado College and Miami-Ohio.

Former BCHL players on the Huskies current roster are Joey Benik, David Morley and Patrick Newell.
