For a kid from Trinity, Fla., Wenatchee Wild forward Lucas Sowder has already beaten the odds by making it to the BCHL.
But that’s not going to be the end of the line in hockey for recently turned 19-year-old. Sowder has committed to play NCAA Div. I hockey next season at Minnesota State University (MSU).
The 5-foot-11, 165-pounder has progressed well this season and with 10-17-27 in 20 games so far, he has already gone over his numbers of last year when he posted 7-16-23 in 42 games. His offensive output puts him third in Wild scoring.
At Minnesota State, Sowder will join a Mavericks program that competes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) along with Bemidji State, Bowling Green, Ferris State, Michigan Tech, Lake Superior State, Alaska, Alaska-Anchorage, Alabama-Huntsville and Northern Michigan.
Sowder is one of two BCHLers currently committed to MSU along with Penticton forward Ryan Sandelin.
BCHL graduates on the Mavericks roster this season are Brad McClure, Edwin Hookenson, Steen Cooper and Connor LaCouvee.
MSU is located in Mankato, Minn. and the Mavericks are coached by Mike Hastings.
