Special teams the difference as Clippers shut down Powell River in win

The Nanaimo Clippers can credit an excellent night on the penalty kill and a pair of special teams goals as the difference after a 3-1 home ice victory over the Powell River Kings on Friday night.

The Clippers shut down the Powell River power-play in the win, holding the Kings to a 0-for-10 mark with the man advantage. Better yet, they received a shorthanded goal from Colton Cyr that proved to be the insurance marker on the night.

Kyle Weber and Teal Burns had staked Nanaimo to a lead after 20 minutes after combining for a pair of first period goals. Weber opened the scoring at the 6:28 mark of the period on a power play, converting a feed from Nick Bell past Kings netminder Josh Watson. Burns doubled the lead with just 18 seconds remaining in the period on an unassisted effort.

Powell River's Jason Yee brought his team within a goal at the 1:39 mark of the second frame, but Cyr's shorthanded effort closed out the scoring minutes later.

Clippers starter Mark Segal stopped 25 shots and allowed just a single goal in the win, while Watson made 25 saves in a losing effort.

Powell River continues a weekend road swing on Saturday with a visit to Victoria, while Nanaimo travels to Cowichan Valley for an encounter with the Capitals.
