Stevens’ shorty puts Kings past Vees

Andy Stevens’ shorthanded tally just past the midway point of the second period was the winning goal for the Powell River Kings in a 4-2 road win over the Penticton Vees.

Jonny Tychonick’s power-play goal opened the scoring for the Vees but later in the first, Powell River got goals 12 seconds apart from Gavin Rauser on the power play and Neal Samanski at even strength to take a 2-1 lead to the second.

Stevens got the only goal of the second and in the third, Ben Berard made it a three goal Kings lead. Jackson Keane got a late goal for Penticton but they got no closer. Mitch Adamyk made 37 saves for the win while Nolan Hildebrand stopped 25 for Penticton.

Ben Brar’s goal at 41 seconds of double overtime delivered a 2-1 win on home ice for the Prince George Spruce Kings over the Langley Rivermen. Trevor St. Jean scored at 5:46 of the first period and it would be the only goal until Ben Poisson tied the game on the power play for PG in the third. Nothing was settled in 4-on-4 play in the first OT but Brar got the winner early in 3-on-3 double OT. Evan DeBrouwer made 33 saves for the win while Braedon Fleming stopped 31 for Langley.

Anthony Vincent scored twice, including the game-winning goal in the third, and earned the game’s 1st Star nod as the Chilliwack Chiefs came from behind and defeated the visiting Coquitlam Express 6-5. Josh Bruce and Sam Kozlowski put the Express up by two early on but Adam Berg and Jared Turcotte replied for Chilliwack with goals 55 seconds apart before Eric Linell restored the Express lead going to the first intermission. Corey Andonovski tied the score for Chilliwack again in the second before Bruce got his second for Coquitlam but it would be the last time the visitors would hold the lead. Vincent got his first of two and Kaden Pickering scored in the final minute of the second to put he Chiefs ahead. Vincent’s second goal proved to be the winner as Alex Ambrosio got one back for Coquitlam but they couldn’t find the tying goal.

A hat trick from Josh Prokop lifted the Vernon Vipers to a 5-3 home win over the West Kelowna Warriors. After Parm Dhaliwal opened the scoring for the visitors, Vernon replied with goals from Prokop, Jordan Sandhu and Prokop again to take a 3-1 lead to the second. Dhaliwal got his second shorthanded in the second but Michael Young scored a power-play goal in the dying seconds of the second to put the Vipers back up by two. Stephen Kleysen’s power-play goal in the third got West Kelowna back within one but Prokop’s hat trick goal into an empty net sealed the win for Vernon.

The Merritt Centennials scored three in the second but the host Alberni Valley Bulldogs replied with three of their own in the third to tie it and OT settled nothing as the teams skated to a 3-3 tie. After a scoreless first, Merritt got goals from Rylan Van Unen, Nicholas Wicks and Zach Zorn in the second to seemingly put the Cents in command. But in the third, Connor Welsh started the Bulldogs rally just 28 seconds in and Paul Selleck followed shortly after. Ryan Steele tied the game with just over two minutes remaining. Austin Roden made 37 saves for Merritt while Colten Lancaster made 28 saves for Alberni Valley against his former team.

Braeden Tuck scored twice and Jacob Yuris set up two for the Trail Smoke Eaters in a 7-4 road win over the Cowichan Valley Capitals. Seth Barton opened the scoring for Trail but Troy MacTavish replied shortly after for the Caps to tie it. Tuck then got his first, shorthanded, and Andre Ghantous followed with a power-play goal to put Trail up 3-1 after one. In the second, Tuck got his second before Ty Pochipinski scored for Cowichan. Levi Glasman and Ethan Scardina then traded tallies and it was 5-3 after 40 minutes. MacTavish got his second early in the third to get the Caps within one but Kale Howarth and Ross Armour each scored to seal the win for the Smoke Eaters.
