One is making the most of his final NCAA season and the other is just making his mark as a rookie but Riley Sweeney and Brad McClure both had big impacts last weekend for their respective teams.
Sweeney, a senior at Michigan Tech, was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) defensive player of the week while McClure, a freshman at Minnesota State, earned the rookie of the week nod.
A fomer Surrey Eagles standout, Sweeney was named MVP of the Winter Carnival tournament after scoring his first two goals of the season. The Delta, BC product scored shorthanded Friday and at even strength Saturday. Sweeney was sound in his own end also and helped the Huskies sweep Bemidji State.
the 22-year-old now has two goals and five helpers on the campaign. In 113 games split between Surrey and Williams Lake, Sweeney scored 14 goals and 47 assists.
McClure, who played two seasons with the Penticton Vees, had three assists for the No. 1-ranked Mavericks in a sweep of visiting Alaska-Anchorage. The Stratford, Ont. product assisted on the game-winning goal both games and had another helper in the 4-0 shutout win Saturday.
The 21-year-old now has eight goals and 11 assists on the season. In 111 games with the Vees, McClure had 68 goals and 38 assists for 126 points.
