Vernon Vipers capture Fred Page Cup with home ice win

The Vernon Vipers are celebrating a Fred Page Cup victory after a 2-1 home ice win in Game 6 on Sunday night.

Vernon started the game strong, with Vipers blueliner Adam Thompson opening the scoring at the 15:08 mark of a first period that saw the home team outshoot Powell River by an 11-3 margin.

Vipers forward Braden Pimm extended the lead on a shothanded effort at 5:47 of the second period. Andrew Pettitt replied late in the period to draw the Coastal Conference champs within a goal — but a third period that included just a trio of Powell River shots resigned the Kings to a loss.

Andrew Hammond turned aside 15 shots for the victory, while Powell River counterpart Carsen Chubak made 22 saves in a losing effort.

With the championship win — which was Vernon's first since the 2003 season — the Vipers move on to face the Grand Prairie Storm in the Doyle Cup.

That series will begin on Friday night at the Vernon Civic Arena. For ticketing information, contact the Vipers office.
