Warriors’ Gehon, Quinn earn scholarships to Fairbanks

The Westside Warriors are pleased to announce that a pair of players have received scholarship commitment from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Forward Chad Gehon, who came to the Warriors in a trade from the Trail Smoke Eaters in January, will head to Fairbanks for the 2009/10 season. Gehon finished in the top 20 in BCHL scoring last season, notching 21 goals and 39 assists in 51 games.

“We are excited for Chad, as he worked hard on his game after arriving in Westside to become a legitimate two-way power forward,” says Warriors head coach and general manager Mark Howell. “Chad will fit in well at Fairbanks, as they need someone to play an aggressive, skilled game, which Chad can excel at. He was one of our most dominant forwards in the play-offs.”

A second Warriors, 19-year old defenceman Michael Quinn, will begin his career with the Nanooks in the 2010/11 season.

“This is an exciting day for Michael as he has worked hard to secure a future in the game and an NCAA Scholarship,” Howell says. “Fairbanks has recruited a very good young man who just happens to be a great skating defenceman. Michael was one of our best defencemen in the second half and at times took over games with his speed and vision for the game.”

“Today is also a positive day for the Warriors, as we continue to demonstrate we are meeting our mandate of developing players and moving them forward in their hockey careers. We are proud that the majority of players that play for us secure scholarships in either the NCAA or in Canada, in the CIS or ACAC.”
