In the commitment spree running through the Victoria Grizzlies locker room this week, Tyler Welsh is the latest to ink an NCAA Div. I pact.
Welsh will play at Yale University for the Bulldogs starting next season. This after his teammates Jake Stevens and Cole Pickup had recently committed to St. Lawrence University and Nebraska-Omaha respectively.
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound native of Whistler, B.C. has five goals and 10 assists in 14 games so far this season and looks a good bet to top his totals of 10-30-40 from 2015-16.
“A fourth player receiving a scholarship already so early in the season is another feather in the cap for the Grizzlies organization,” said Grizzlies general manager and head coach Craig Didmon. “We are very happy for Tyler as he has worked very hard every day since he got here last season. Although he not the biggest center man in the league he makes up for it with a huge heart with the kind of work ethic and determination that not only has made him a better player, but those around him as well.”
At Yale, Welsh will join a squad that currently features former Surrey Eagles defenceman Dan O’Keefe. Welsh and Prince George Spruce Kings forward Kyle Johnson are the only BCHL players at the moment that are committed to the Bulldogs program.
Yale is located in New Haven, Conn. and the hockey team competes in the NCAA’s ECAC Hockey conference. The other ECAC Hockey teams are Princeton, Quinnipiac, Union, Harvard, St. Lawrence, RPI, Cornell, Colgate, Brown, Clarkson and Dartmouth.
