Westgard commits to SFU

Although he finished his BCHL career in a different jersey, Ty Westgard will forever be remembered as a Surrey Eagle. He played his first game as an affiliate for his hometown Eagles during the 2013-14 season and now, six seasons and 176 regular-season games later, he is moving on to play for Simon Fraser University (SFU) in 2019-20.

Westgard played 160 games for Surrey, including a stint as team captain in 2018-19, before he was traded to the Coquitlam Express ahead of the trade deadline. The 21-year-old ends his BCHL career at over a point a game with 177 points (48 goals, 129 assists) in 176 contests.

He also spent time in the WHL, playing games for the Victoria Royals and Portland Winterhawks.

The Surrey native will remain close to home as the SFU campus is located in Burnaby, B.C.

The team plays in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) along with Selkirk College, Trinity Western University, Vancouver Island University and the University of Victoria.

Last year’s SFU roster featured a pair of former BCHL players in Coquitlam Express alum Mitch Newsome and Westgard’s former Eagles teammate Domenic Masellis.

Westgard is the first 2018-19 BCHL player to commit to a BCIHL program and the sixth to commit to a Canadian university program.
