Wicks will play for UAA

Main training camps for the coming BCHL season have not yet opened but it wasn’t too early for Merritt Centennials forward Nicholas Wicks to make a big decision about his college hockey future.

The native of Delta, B.C. has secured an NCAA Div. I future at the University of Alaska-Anchorage (UAA) and is set to have his freshman season there starting in 2019.

Wicks posted 12 goals and 34 assists in 57 games last season, his 46 points good enough for second on the team. For his BCHL career, the 5-foot-9, 165-pound forward has 17-41-58 in 103 games played.

At UAA, Wicks will be joining a Seawolves program that competes in the NCAA’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) along with Bemidji State, Bowling Green, Alaska, Lake Superior State, Northern Michigan, Alabama-Huntsville, Michigan Tech and Ferris State.

The Seawolves program has been a strong recruiting presence in the BCHL in recent years. Last season, UAA had 12 BCHL grads on the roster in Jarrett Brown, Jeremiah Luedtke, Brody Claeys, Austin Azurdia, Matt Anholt, Tanner Johnson, Corey Renwick, Olivier Mantha, Jonah Renouf, Nathan Renouf, Cam Amantea and Zac Masson.

Other BCHLers to commit to UAA from last season are Jared Nash, Zach Court and Drayson Pears.

NHL alums from the Seawolves program include Jay Beagle, Curtis Glencross, Mike Peluso and Duvie Westcott.
