The BC Hockey League has announced the Coastal Conference winners of the Kyle Turris Community Award, presented by Rogers.
The award is given to BCHL players who go above and beyond in their community. Each team submits a winner from their organization, along with the reasons they were chosen. This year’s winners from the Coastal Conference are:
Alberni Valley Bulldogs – Caden Tremblay
Chilliwack Chiefs – Hunter McInnes
“Hunter has built meaningful relationships throughout our community over the past four seasons and his dedication never wavers. Despite an injury this season, he still contributed over 50 volunteer hours, supporting Special Olympics athletes, delivering meals to those in need and reading with local kids. On game days, he’s a familiar and welcoming presence, engaging with fans, fostering connections and ensuring that everyone, from teammates to Special Olympics athletes, feels like part of the hockey family. Hunter’s kindness, commitment and ability to uplift those around him make him, not only a leader, but an inspiration to everyone he meets.”
Coquitlam Express – James Shannon
“James was chosen for our Community Award due to his unwavering dedication to making a difference in local schools and community events. His commitment to volunteering, mentoring students and actively participating in initiatives that bring people together has had a lasting impact. James embodies the values of leadership, generosity and community spirit.”
Cowichan Valley Capitals – Nicolas Beaudoin
“Nicolas is always the first hand up to volunteer for Capitals community events. He is the only player we know of that actively volunteers outside of the Capitals organization in the community. He spends one evening a week playing ball hockey with under-5 to under-12 teams in the Cowichan Valley.”
Langley Rivermen – Hunter Curtis
“Since joining the Rivermen last year, Hunter has come a long way on the ice and off of it. His commitment to the Rivermen off the ice, especially in the offseason, may go unnoticed to some, but not to the team. Hunter is also the 2024-25 recipient of the Langley Rivermen community award, renamed the Ronin Sharma Community Award. With this award, the recipient receives $1,000 from the Ronin Sharma Foundation.”
Nanaimo Clippers – Connor DeTurris
“Connor exemplifies the spirit of the Kyle Turris Community Award through his unwavering commitment to community engagement. Beyond his on-ice contributions, he actively participates in local initiatives such as school visits and community events, fostering a strong connection between the team and Nanaimo residents. His dedication to making a positive impact off the ice makes him deserving of this award.”
Powell River Kings – Jake Westhaver
“Always with a smile on his face, Jake has been a wonderful presence in the Powell River community this season. From weekly visits to schools for the Read Program to hanging out with the seventh player, he always has time to give back to the community.”
Prince George Spruce Kings – Linden Makow
“A five-year Spruce King, a local player and this year’s team captain, Linden understands what it means to be part of a community-owned team. Always a leader at team community functions, he has gone above and beyond to ensure members of the community feel strongly about the presence that the Spruce Kings have in Prince George.”
Surrey Eagles – Cam Caron
“Cam has demonstrated a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for contributing to the community. He is the first player to willing get out there and inspire the next generation. Cam represents everything it means to be a positive role model. As a result, he also won the Eagles Chuck Westgard Community Award for 2024-25.”
Victoria Grizzlies – Julian Cull
“Julian has been an exemplary leader both on and on the ice for us in his year and a half with the team. He is often the driving force behind organizing and engaging in events outside of the rink, whether that is working with underprivileged youth, special needs or school visits. His commitment to giving back to the community where he grew up has been simply sensational and we could not be more proud of what he means to the organization.”
