BCHL Playoff Recap – Thursday, April 5

Kyle Johnson scored the series-winning goal 8:06 into overtime to give the Prince George Spruce Kings a 2-1 win over the Powell River Kings in Game 5 and send his team to the league finals.

After two scoreless periods, Powell River opened the scoring on an unassisted Kyle Kawamura goal midway through the third. Down 1-0, the Spruce Kings pulled their goalie with under two minutes to go and Dylan Ahorn scored with 1:32 left to force overtime.

Powell River’s Matteo Paler-Chow stopped 46 of 48 shots, including nine stops in overtime, while Prince George goalie Evan DeBrouwer made 29 saves and got his league-high 12th win of the postseason. Debrouwer now has the second-best goals-against average in the playoffs at 1.96 and a save percentage of .925.

With his assist on the overtime winner, Ethan de Jong moved into second place in BCHL playoff scoring with 22 points in 19 games.

With the win, Prince George advances to the Fred Page Cup Final and will wait to play the winner of the Interior Division Final between Wenatchee and Trail.
